Australian Alpaca Products from the Benbellen Alpaca Farm
on the Mid North Coast, NSW Australia
When Sherry Stumm and Peter Wildblood bought their property in the beautiful coastal valley of Hannam Vale on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, they had little in mind other than to enjoy the beauty and peace of their new home.
Little did they think then of the alpaca and its 5000 year tradition of providing high-quality clothing and other durable and useful alpaca products.
Beginning with a small number of alpacas in 1998, the alpaca herd at Benbellen Country Retreat has grown to a sufficient number of high quality animals for the production of hand crafted, quality alpaca products. The range starts with hand knitted, quality fashion knitwear (alpaca sweater or known in Australia as "jumper") and warm, lightweight bed covering (duvet also known as doona, doonah and comforter) and orders for these are now being taken. The 55 acre (22 hectare) property runs high into the nearby hills of the Cooranbakh National Park with the home paddocks devoted to the alpaca population and the higher reaches to quality Holstein Friesian heifers.
The homestead at Benbellen is host to travellers whether they are driving north or south along the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane. "Escapees" from the metropolitan centres of Australia, as well as the many and welcome guests from overseas, are a feature of the life here.
The growing herd of alpacas are an integral part of the guests' stay at Benbellen. Alpacas are loved by guests for their inquisitiveness, their playfulness and their sense of fun. The birth of a new cria (baby alpaca) is always a special event; it's a truly wonderful experience too, for those guests fortunate to be visiting at the time.
